Musculoskeletal Health

Musculoskeletal Problems

Musculoskeletal problems affect the muscles, bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments in your body. These issues can cause pain, stiffness, or weakness, making it harder to move or perform everyday tasks. Common musculoskeletal problems include:

Back Pain: A common issue that can range from mild discomfort to severe pain. It may result from poor posture, lifting heavy objects incorrectly, or injury.

Arthritis: When joints become inflamed, causing pain and stiffness. It can affect any joint in the body, such as the knees, hips, and fingers.

Tendonitis: This happens when a tendon (the tissue connecting muscles to bones) becomes inflammed, often due to repetitive movement or overuse, leading to pain and swelling.

Sports Injuries: Injuries to muscles, ligaments, or joints that occur during exercise or playing sports or physical activity, such as sprains, strains, or fractures.

Frozen Shoulder: A condition where the shoulder becomes stiff and painful, making it difficult to move the arm.

Osteoporosis: A condition where bones become weak and brittle, making them more prone to fractures.

Muscle Strains and Ligament Sprains: Occurs when muscles or ligaments are overstretched or torn, often due to physical activity or accidents.

Physiotherapy for Musculoskeletal Problems

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at our clinic focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting your joints, muscles, tendons, and bones. The goal is to restore pain-free movement, improve strength, and increase muscle control.

Your physiotherapist may use various techniques to help with your recovery, such as:

Hands-on techniques: These include methods like soft tissue release and manual therapy.

Exercise Programmes: Tailored exercises to aid your rehabilitation and strengthen the affected area.

Postural Advice: Guidance to help improve posture and reduce strain on your body.

Electrotherapy: Equipment like ultrasound and shockwave therapy to reduce pain and promote healing.

Acupuncture: Used if appropriate to help with pain relief.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Effective in a wide range of painful conditions, acupuncture is commonly used to treat musculoskeletal pain in areas such as the back, shoulder, neck and leg. It has been successfully used to treat sports injuries, trapped nerves and muscle strains.

Acupuncture uses fine filiform needles which are inserted into specific points on the body to relive pain or for therapeutic purposes. It is known to increase the body's release of natural painkillers - endorphin and serotonin in the pain pathways of both the spinal cord and brain.

All our needles are single use and sterile and disposed of immediately after use. They are normally left in place for approximately 20 - 30 minutes. You may not be aware of any sensation while the acupuncture needles are being inserted. Once inserted you may feel a dull ache or tingling sensation around the needle point.

Patients often feel very relaxed and heaviness in their limbs during treatment.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy

A modern and highly effective treatment in orthopedic and rehabilitation. Shockwave therapy refers to mechanical pressure pulses that expand as a wave in the body. These pulses help to improve musculoskeletal mobility and provision of drug-free pain relief.

During the treatment a high-intensity sound wave interacts with the tissues of the body. These waves stimulate an inflammatory and tissue repair response which leads to beneficial effects such as increased blood flow, reversal of inflammation, analgesic effects, stimulation of collagen and dissolution of calcium build-up.

The shock wave applicator will be applied to the treatment area with the shocks lasting between 3-5 minutes. You may have some discomfort following treatment but this will resolve within 24 hours.

Shockwave therapy is used to treat:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Patellar Tendinopathy
  • Shoulder Tendinopathy
  • Heel Spurs
  • Greater Trochanter Pain Syndrome
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Golfers Elbow
  • Myo-fascial Pain in the Lower Back

Sports Massage

Sports Massage

This treatment offers numerous advantages for alleviating discomfort and tension in tight and achy muscles. The massage targets soft tissues like muscles, tendons and ligaments using a combination of pressure and stretching.

Sports massage uses kneading and rolling techniques on the soft tissue, it can employ a more intense pressure compared to a remedial massage to alleviate soreness. It can be used for multiple purposes which include performance enhancement, muscle warm up and assistance in post event healing.

This treatment is not just for athletes it can benefit anyone by promoting relaxation and reducing stress through improved circulation and a reduction in tension.
